Dear {educational institution}:
I am writing to ask that my financial aid be maintained, despite the fact that I {am not taking enough units/failed or dropped a class and fell below units}.
{This/last} semester was like no other I'd ever faced. First, {personal or financial hardship}, and then {additional personal or financial hardship}. As I'm sure you can imagine, it has been hard to focus on my classes during this time.
A {lighter course load/aid flexibility} would really give me the breathing room to get back on my feet academically. The situations I mentioned have mostly resolved, and being on pace for graduation remains my goal. Without continued financial aid, I will be forced to {take time off to work/get more student loans/drop out}.
Thank you in advance for your consideration.
